Why Prom Was A Night To Remember

By Gretchen Kernbach on November 23, 2015

Most of us would like to move past high school, push it as far away as possible from us. Sure, it was socially tough and scarring, but it did have its moments. When I look back on my senior prom night, it was perfect (in the least cliche way possible).

College is more fun than high school — a given. But it will never give me my prom night experience again. Being asked by your date, the dress shopping, the fancy restaurant, and dancing; it is now just a memory. For that, a great one.

To those way past their college years, take a step back and remember your prom night. And to those who have yet to experience it, make the most out of it. It truly is a special life moment.

Never again will us girls be “asked” to a dance. Those crazy ideas the high school boys tried to master were the best source of entertainment in the spring. The posters and flowers, and food on occasion, brought smiles to all our teenage faces. Of course, we already had a hint as to who was asking us but the exact process was still surprising. It ended in a hug or kiss, sometimes both. The best was having a crowd around cheering and clapping.

Then came planning the prom groups. Although stressful, in the end we ended up with our close friends. Soon we started to exchange food and dress ideas. Now that was the stressful part.

Dress. Shopping. Did we want red, black, blue, pink, or a white dress? Strapless? Tight? The choices were endless. Finding the perfect dress was every girls’ favorite past time. Scrolling through the endless online pages was thrilling. I felt so excited, knowing the impeccable dress was right around the corner. Whether it was on a website or in a store, filing through the countless dresses was such an adrenaline rush.

The next step, getting ready. Planning ahead on how I was going to do my hair was more important than my dress. You had to look great, better than great. Most girls I knew went to a professional salon and all came out looking stunning. The one time our mothers let us blow almost $100 just on a hairdo. I mean, it was prom.

The second best part of prom, besides the actual dance, was pictures. Getting that perfect Instagram photo op was on every girl’s mind. Posing with friends and dates was a good time for the girls, but obviously annoying to all the boys. Whether it was a big or small group, pictures always proved to be hectic. But when will we ever experience that again?

The car, limo, or bus ride was a short moment that brought a lot of joy. Blasting music and dancing with your friends really put life on hold for the time it did. A final celebration before you all graduate and go your separate ways. For me, our party bus was almost as fun as the dance. Something about the loudness that let us feel a common sense of solidarity.

Fancy dinners with a big group of friends come rarely now. Perhaps fraternity formals fill the gap but they won’t ever match up to prom. Between the rides and the pictures, it was nice to finally be able to sit down and take a break from the hectic prom activities.

Finally, the dance. The lights and music were alive. Being in the ballroom we rented out at a hotel felt wonderful. There was a photo booth and plenty of food. Seeing everyone there having the time of their lives is unforgettable. On a personal note, the time I spent with my boyfriend there is irreplaceable. Never have I ever danced so much. Sure, prom can seem stupid to some but I let myself go that night and do not regret a moment of it.

As any major school dance would go, there was indeed an after-party. It served as a last moment between you and your friends. One last time to be crazy and have fun. Typically, after-parties are what teens look forward to most. So to whoever you are, your memories either lie in the dance or the party. The important thing is to hold onto them. You will never again have a high school prom.

It truly was the best night of my life from start to finish. The people I spent it with and the places I went were the utmost fun. You can’t ever experience a night like this again. Make the most of prom — they don’t lie when they say it is a night to remember.
